For beginners of any age, I begin by discussing goals, milestones, and how we will achieve them. I do use method books, but only recommend those that will be useful in and out of lessons. I keep lessons fun and engaging, and always demonstrate before expecting the student to do the same. Regardless of the age of the student, I want to ensure that the music we work on is both enjoyable for them and healthy for their voice. I do research for each individual student so that the correct repertoire is chosen! For beginning students who are ages 7-12, I begin with folk songs and Disney songs. These have simpler melodies and engaging text that help younger students stay interested. I also teach at Music & Arts in Orchard Park, and serve as the primary instructor for the Hispanic Heritage Council Guitar Initiative. The Guitar Initiative is a non-profit afterschool program that provides free guitar and music theory lessons to children who otherwise would not have access.
