For piano I prefer the Faber series. I like to include scales, sight-reading, and repertoire of the students choosing and of my suggestion. For Voice I like to cover the anatomical fundamentals (posture, breath, phonation, and depending on age), in the first lesson, and each lesson includes a warm-up as well as at least one piece of repertoire of the students choosing. A weekly homework assignment of memorizing the chord or chords learned in the days lesson will be given. After three chords or so are feeling good, we can move on to learning a basic song! I listen to what the student has to say, and also hone in on where they are currently in their musicianship. This allows me to really see what areas need to be focused on specifically. I strongly encourage students to push themselves and will often provide slightly more challenging material to help them improve. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the music theory basics which will always serve as a strong background to their music knowledge and overall muscle memory. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
