I try to adapt the method to the skill of the student, which incorporates my own system, based on years of teaching. I teach according to the student;s skill, and at their own pace. While the easy answer is, "We'll begin with the fundamentals," the more puzzling question and answer is, "How can I apply fundamentals in a meaningful way to the student to ensure that they stay engaged, interested, and focused?" For beginning students who are children, I start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements (or the Hal Leonard Guitar Method for guitar students) to build a strong foundation in reading music, proper technique, tone production, and fundamental skills. Once students have a solid grasp of the basics, I introduce age-appropriate solo repertoire to develop confidence and prepare them for their first recital performance. So, while I do want the students to be very proficient musicians, I am mostly concerned in helping cultivate the student's passion for music.
