I believe listening is the key to learning. I listen to my students to discover what techniques are working best for them and which are their weakest then adapt my lessons to their needs. I also try to teach students how to listen to music, hear the empty spaces in songs that really give them their polish, and how to listen for other individual instruments to understand whem to accompany instruments and when to give them their own space. I started teaching at the age of 17 sharing my knowledge with children of my coworkers before I had formal education. Since then, I have had the opportunity to be a guitar instructor at Camp Lonehollow and have had private students during my time as a guitar pedigodgy student. A strong understanding of the fretboard and consistent quality practice is essential for any aspiring musician. I encourage my students to enter competitions and find chances to perform on their own. It became a known fact when I was in college that I was a guitar player, and many people admired my skill. Some of my fellow Florida Southern Moccasins went so far as to request teaching straight from myself. I personally enjoy listening to and playing a wide variety of different kinds of music. From 60s classic rock to modern pop music, Stevie Ray Vaughan to Cage the Elephant, and even showtunes and Hip-Hop/Rap grooves, I hope to have something to offer to everyone. Read More

I've had the opportunity to take guitar and voice lessons from a number of great instructors, and have learned a multitude of great methods from them. When learning the fundamentals of guitar, I find it easiest to first learn through visually learning the hand shapes and hearing the different notes and intervals. The names of the chords and sight reading can come secondary once you have a basic understanding of how to play. Read More

Depending on the age and personality, I cater each lesson to the individual. If they are younger students, I'll use Mel Bay or Hal Leonard books, but sometimes I will make a custom book that builds with their development and learning style. I believe reading sheet music is important, but understand that being able to play along with other musicians using ear training and improv skills, as well as reading chord charts, is just as necessary. My teaching experience dates back to my early college days, about twenty-two years ago. I have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last two decades. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for their instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy their instrument and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More
