My approach seeks to breathe air under the wings of the students' interest and attention by making them a constant starting point, while also laying the groundwork of introspection for students to develop and apply their own practices of learning, exploration, and innovation going forward. My teaching methods focus on considering embodied experiences of music, as well as a range of philosophical considerations. Students will be encouraged to think about how feelings, subjectivities, sounds, and spaces interact in complex ways, along with a series of other metaphysical questions that I believe are essential to a holistic praxis of understanding and learning music. I think the student should begin by playing the exercise or piece very slowly with the metronome(a time keeping device). If they have to they can practice the right and left hand fingerings separately. They should start with the metronome at the slowest speed. When they feel like they can play with the right and left hands together they should gradually speed up the metronome. It may help to "prepare" each fingering before striking the string with the metronome at a manageable speed. Read More

I have been teaching guitar for 7 years. I began teaching when I was 17 years old at Maley's Music in Arlington, Virginia. I had the opportunity to teach students of all ages, from very young to adult students. It was here that I developed my passion for teaching. I continued teaching regularly throughout my time at Oberlin Conservatory. Each semester, I taught 4 college students who were taking guitar lessons for academic credit. Read More

I have been teaching in the NOVA area for a little over three years now. I started when I returned from out of state and have not looked back since. I have maintained a studio of about 10-15 students almost consistently after about a year of starting. My students have ranged widely in age, from elementary students to retired adults who have have wanted to learn an instrument. I am focused on both enjoying playing but also pushing students to their limits and making them much better. Read More

My teaching style has been described as one that rewards hard work and dedication, but leaves room for experimentation and fun. I believe that each student has unique gifts to offer the world, and it is my job to uncover them through a combination of connecting to the individual as a person and allowing their personality and aptitude to shine. My goal is always to inspire my students to want to learn, instead of fostering an environment where they feel forced into it. Read More

I always encourage students to study and practice on a regular basis. This greatly helps them make progress and like the instrument over time. Nonetheless, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. My homework sheets are designed to address both of those points. I always encourage them to practice well; when they practice well, they improved and once they improve they start to like the instrument more. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to a month after I picked up the guitar, when I started teaching a group of highschool friends how to play. Later, at the Field School, I created a club for other Field students to learn how to play guitar in a group setting. At the same time I took a job as a clerk at the local guitarshop and began teaching beginner students privately. Read More
