I think it is important to learn to read standard notation as well as tablature. The student should clap the rhythms out when learning to read music. The student will start with easy exercises and gradually progress to harder ones. At a certain point the student should be able to stop playing exercises and learn by playing real pieces. The student will have to play some exercises at first but if they stick with it they will be able to play real music at a certain point and the guitar will become fun. Read More

My teaching experience started eleven years ago when I retired from my career as a Systems Engineer. The guitar technique I teach is mostly finger style, which is suitable of a wide variety of solo guitar music, including Pop, Jazz, Rock, and especially Classical. I usually teach at the home of my students if the drive is not too far, but I also teach at my house in Gaithersburg Md, Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress, gain confidence and develop a passion for the instrument. I have a lot of experience with curriculum development. My favorite books to teach from include Accent on Achievement, Alfred's Piano Book series and Essential Elements. However I can teach without a book on any instruments and compose assignments as I have done in the past. Even if I am teaching using a book, I usually do a lot of ear training and music theory based assignments that are not found in these books. Read More

For young beginner students, I usually begin with the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book. This book introduces music notation as well as divided into small chunks for young kids to understand and retain. For older beginner students, I also refer often to Aaron Shearer Learning Classic Guitar as it is more text heavy and explains in-depth for students to have a strong understanding. Once students finish learning the fundamentals from the book, I present them with various solo pieces and technique exercises to go along with it. Read More

I sincerely believe that even the most basic material can be made to "sound good", and I stress this from the beginning. I'm big on playing duets. I'll tend to toss in tidbits about the physics of sound, or how muscle memory works. I like to engage the curiousity of the student in this way. I like to ask students about what music they like, and what they would like to do--play in a school talent show? Read More
