I think it is important to learn to read standard notation as well as tablature. The student should clap the rhythms out when learning to read music. The student will start with easy exercises and gradually progress to harder ones. At a certain point the student should be able to stop playing exercises and learn by playing real pieces. However I can teach without a book on any instruments and compose assignments as I have done in the past. For young beginner students, I usually begin with the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book. This book introduces music notation as well as divided into small chunks for young kids to understand and retain. For older beginner students, I also refer often to Aaron Shearer Learning Classic Guitar as it is more text heavy and explains in-depth for students to have a strong understanding.
