For students who are just starting to learn - I teach them the basics of music and how to properly handle the guitar. It is very important to know your way around the instrument, so I will touch upon basic things such as the parts of a guitar, the names of the strings, how to know where you are on the fretboard, etc. From here I will proceed to develop the student's technique so they feel comfortable enough to begin playing scales and chords. A Texas native, Clynt grew up exposed to a variety of music. The southern influence of blues, gospel, country, and jazz were a huge part of his musical upbringing. While his formal training was largely in classical music for many years, he also remembers learning his first tunes note-by-not from his father (a jazz and country musician) in their living room in Texas when he was not out of elementary school. Having experienced both formal and informal training methods all of his life, he is adept at providing either - or any ratio - of the two to a student in need. Read More

I will do whatever it takes to teach the student whatever they are willing to learn. If they want to learn a specific genre on an instrument that has never been used for that genre, I will be happy to teach them. For example, I can play trap music on a piano, but I could also play death metal on a piano as well. Trap music doesn't have to be restricted to a computer, and death metal doesn't have to be restricted to just guitar, bass, and drums. Read More

I have found that a simultaneous combination of book-guided learning and practical application is often most enjoyable for a student (and teacher). Learning the fundamentals is certainly important. Using this knowledge to learn pieces of songs and understand how the songs are constructed keeps things fresh for the student and reinforces the lessons better than book learning alone. I typically start beginners with the Mel Bay series of guitar instruction books. Read More

A student will always learn technique and theory on a much deeper level when it is taught in conjunction to music that they like, rather than as a separate academic study. This method maintains a students interest as well. With regards to advanced players, I find that the problem is rarely how to play, but rather what to play, or what NOT to play. This is usually best solved by helping a player to re-examine his or her approach to applying what they already know. Read More

Over the years, I've taken lessons from instructors who had an array of teaching styles. While in high school, I was taught through intimidation and was scared into learning, which is something I was able to handle. This methods can actually turn students away from music which is the main reason dislike approach. Students should be comfortable and relaxed when entering a lesson. This not only creates a positive learning environment for the student but helps create a relationship between instructor and student that only helps the growth of both individuals. Read More
