I encourage small but daily practice. you don't have to play guitar for 4 hours a day to make good progress. Just 15 minutes every day will be sufficient especially when you first start out. It is deeply satisfying when i see a student grasp a concept that they worked so hard on. set realistic goals and don't try to overwhelm yourself by trying to play extremely difficult music in a short amount of time. basics is key if you know the basics you can do the harder things and with ease. My teaching experience started after college, teaching a family friend bass guitar. From there I realized I could just as well teach guitar, piano, and saxophone as well. I find it rewarding to watch people grow and learn skills they can use the rest of their life, enriching their life with the expression of music. From taking private lessons of my own on saxophone and guitar throughout high school and college, I've learned that consistency of practice is key! Read More

For beginning students I try to start with the essentials. It is important for young children to become familiar with the instrument, the proper way to hold an instrument. The proper way to sit when playing or stand while singing. Fundamentals at the earliest ages are essential. Practicing the fundamentals leads to success which leads to a desire to learn more about the instrument. Read More

As far as books go, I prefer the Hal Leonard method, especially for beginner musicians. I combine visual, audio and kinesthetic learning methods to tailor to anyone's needs. After the basics are taught or they're already learned, I assess the student's level and teach the student what they wish to learn to the best of my ability. Read More

Instruments: Voice
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Please understand that, for seriously practicing voice, there is a minimum age, typically. Too many parents push their very young child to get lessons early, so they can get a head start. However, a child below the age of twelve has a developing instrument, and the strain of seriously practicing professional vocal technique can cause harm, ESPECIALLY if this is a child trying imitate the low belting of pop singers or the big tone of opera singers.
That being said, on more than one occasion, I have provided voice lessons to very young singers, who have been gifted with powerful voices. But the reason was to save their instruments before they hurt themselves. I taught them how to sing beautiful music like a child, waiting for their instrument to mature, while also teaching them how to read music and understand more complicated musical techniques. So these students are "ahead" where it counts.
Serious vocal technique can begin after the voice change. This can happen as early as ten for girls, and as late as fourteen for boys. If you feel that your child has achieved their voice change, I can quickly assess that through a preliminary lesson.
Please be safe. Your child's voice is a delicate instrument and it can be harmed.
When will I start to see results?
There are no shortcuts if you truly wish to learn how to master the voice. It took me six years of study before I was able to perform at a semi-professional level, starting at the age of fifteen. It takes time for you to train the muscles in your body to react the way you want to on an instinctive level.
That being said, the effects of true vocal technique will start to improve your singing extremely quickly. Within the first two months, you will feel a difference in your posture, confidence, lung capacity, tone, volume, and agility. Students are encouraged to sing during the learning process. It is through repetition and practice that the muscles in our body learn how to act when we sing.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
There are books that exist for voice, though you won't find nearly as many, and they don't agree. This is because the human voice is the only natural instrument, and it isn't mechanical. You have to learn how to make your body do what you want it to do through trial and error, with a teacher who can hear what's happening on the inside.
Most of the materials I will use in our lessons will come from my own collection, which have been tried and true for decades, in not centuries. I have resources for learning how to read music, learning how to hear music, learning how to sing music in multiple languages, and learning how to maximize your range.
Depending on your needs, I may ask you to purchase some books. One of the best books for beginning students with a serious passion for professional singing is: Practical Method of Italian Singing - Vaccai.
