I always like to know what is the goal of each of my students. What style or genre they like as well as if they are aiming to be a solo performer or part of a band or ensemble. I like to start students on method books such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, this will teach students basic music theory as well as how to read on a staff. My teaching style is individualized to meet the needs of the students. I like to use a portion of the first lesson to discuss the goals and musical interest of the student regardless of age. I encourage beginner students to learn basic theory to develop rudimentary skills. I then try to incorporate a student’s favorite music into the lesson plans.
