My methods depend on the student's age, what they may have already begun in lessons with another teacher, and I also take into consideration the assessment of their learning style-choosing a method that works best for their needs. Basically you could say that I have no 'one' method. I have as many methods as I have students because every single student deserves for me to take the time to get to know them and to find out what educational practices will fit best with their learning style and personality. Hi, my name is Justin and I've been teaching private lesson. And teaching band since 2015. I went to Wisconsin Lutheran College and earned my degree in 2007. Before beginning teaching I was a stay at home dad for a number of years until my two kids were in school full time. I'm very passionate about creating an appreciation and love of music in students of all ages. I love helping my students have fun, learn new skills, and grow as musicians. Read More

I believe my top goal as a music teacher is to encourage the exploration of music. Any of my students should be discovering new music, branching out from the style(s) they are already interested in. I've obtained an appreciation of so many different forms of the art that I love to share. I want you to play the music you enjoy playing! Read More

So far, I've taught some kids and adults. I've learned that teaching kids versus teaching adult students is different. Each age group would require their own tasks. For instance, if I were to be teaching a kid who is maybe 10 years old, I would start off by introducing the notes on the instrument. Then, I would create games or exercises based on the new stuff we'd cover. For an adult student, I wouldn't use any games on them. Read More

My preferred method for very young students has been the Suzuki method, as I believe a well trained ear continues to be our best musical learning tool later in life as well. When students progress to reading, the full line of Suzuki books can of course be utilized, but it is very advisable to incorporate additional materials and techniques. The Kodaly method is also useful and even more traditional 'reading first' techniques can be used if requested. Read More

I start beginning students with both a method book and a blank manuscript which we use to journal weekly. The method book is to instill a variety of fundamental skills while the manuscript (or materials saved and shared in google drive) is used to be a fun way of focussing and developing each student's individual trajectory. More advanced students may or may not require a method book per se but may be referenced to a variety of sources dependent on their current level of development. Read More
