My teaching experience started after college, teaching a family friend bass guitar. From there I realized I could just as well teach guitar, piano, and saxophone as well. I find it rewarding to watch people grow and learn skills they can use the rest of their life, enriching their life with the expression of music. From taking private lessons of my own on saxophone and guitar throughout high school and college, I've learned that consistency of practice is key! Read More

For beginners, I use Alfred's books. They are very easy to understand. Alfred's Book Course are the most valuable books I have ever seen. I use Alfred's: lesson book, theory book, technique book, notespeller booke, and recital book. I usually make sure to include recital book as we are going to start our first recital this year. I also make sure that we alternate between lesson and technique book every lesson. Read More

I first try to discover the student's knowledge of the instrument and find out their current level of experience. At that point, I can design a structured lesson plan around that. I'm very patient so I try to learn the student's pace and level of endurance. I always ask to see if the student has any issues with something they have learned in a past lesson. The guitar can be a challenging instrument due to its physical challenges. Read More

I believe the single most important part of a musician's work begins in the ear. Building a foundation in aural training, and understanding what you're hearing, will allow any student to then approach an instrument with clarity and patience. For most students at beginning or intermediate levels, I'll use a dual-curriculum approach to develop ear training/theory understanding alongside technical skill and practical ability. I create my own lesson plans with each student's needs in mind, in order to help them follow their personal path to musical success. Read More

I never want to pressure or overwhelm a student with too much information or expectation, because instead of the instruction being seen as a challenge, it is interpreted as an unenjoyable command, and that discourages the student from practicing to meet their goals, instead of motivating and inspiring them. What I find works best is relating lessons to popular current music, further exploring the bridge of dynamics that make up the songs that the student enjoys. Read More

As I've stated before, I really like to focus on how to play the instrument effectively. Proper posture, finger placement, finger pressure and articulation are all part of playing the proper technique. It also helps to minimize fatigue during countless hours of practice. Also, one of the main things in to make sure that the student is practicing on a daily basis and to develop their own practice regimen. Developing a love for the instrument, bordering on healthy obsession, is the key to progressing as a guitar player. Read More
