My goal as a teacher is to avoid any type of dogmatic "one size fits all" curriculum.  I always want to know what music the student enjoys and build my lesson plans based on their tastes.  Chords can be physically challenging for beginners so I like to work with single-note melodies early on so that the student isn't quickly discouraged.  Learning chords becomes the medium-term goal.  As for the long-term, I will then use specific songs as examples for how music theory works in the context of their favorite bands. I started teaching music lessons back when I was 14, when friends would ask for tips or lessons, and local parents wanted lessons for their children. I fell in love with the act of helping others to realize the music inside them, and have been teaching consistently ever since. Learning any musical instrument involves learning about oneself. I think of teaching as a learning experience for both parties in that I get to go over my fundamentals and at the same time get to see someone else benefit from it. I began playing piano for church choirs in my hometown. During my college years, my private lessons experience began when I would give pointers to my fellow music majors who had to pass piano proficiency as part of their degree requirement. Furthermore, I am from the school of thought of concentrated practice. I help students identify the length of time they can concentrate without exhausting their attention. These have been with several artists in the Jazz and Latin music world, as well as with my own group.
