I am a passionate, self-motivated, energetic music instructor who loves work with students and sharing my love of music. In 2016, I graduated from South Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Industry and minored in Music Education. Within those studies, my primary instrument of focus was the trombone, however, along the way, I picked up and worked on different types of instruments, such as the flute, all of the low brass, piano, and my vocal ability. I am a classic depressed musician. I also believe that mental health is something that is not talked about in our pop culture enough. Music has helped me through a lot of tough times and struggles. I work to bring more attention to mental health and suicide awareness with my solo project Mr. Nobody, I do all the instruments for my project and it has been quite the learning experience for myself. Growing up I’ve had a variety of coaches, one thing I noticed is that I was always lost enameled by the teachers that nurtured my creativity. Many times there are music teachers that only teach what they like and what they know. My students can expect to expand their versatility but as a smaller portion of the overall focus. My methods and practice is very student centered. It is my job whether the student is aware of what they want to learn to find out what they are most passionate about and nurture that to grow. As far as method books go, I like Hal Leonard's Essential Elements (I've used those methods a lot when teaching middle school band) for young students, Hanon's exercises and Bela Bartok's Mikrokosmos for intermediate piano, and trips to Guitar Center for adult guitarists (I'm serious: John Petrucci has a great method for Rock Guitar, for example). When I graduated I went to Goshen College to study Piano pedagogy, I quickly switched my major to teaching and shortly into the semester I was offered a job as a head music director for a youth program at a local church in Mishawaka, IN where I worked on staff for eight years, training hundreds of young people to play music and sing, many of which are now professional musicians. I first started teaching music in 2014. I began as a guitar instructor, then made my way into teaching piano, drums, and bass as well. I believe that the best way to teach a student how to play an instrument is to first teach them how to play music. In my experience I have found that allowing students to try several different instruments and participate in group jams with other musicians teaches them to fall in love with making music. Read More
