I am a classic depressed musician. I also believe that mental health is something that is not talked about in our pop culture enough. Music has helped me through a lot of tough times and struggles. I work to bring more attention to mental health and suicide awareness with my solo project Mr. Nobody, I do all the instruments for my project and it has been quite the learning experience for myself. Setting S.M.A.C. goals for my students is very important. These are specific, measurable, achievable and challenging. Nothing makes me feel more accomplished as when I help my student feel accomplished and reach their goals. I have a very non critical approach and encourage mistakes with a non judgemental attitude. I feel this lightens up the atmosphere and allows the student to grow at a much more rapid rate. Read More

For beginners, I start with chord study. I like to incorporate teaching songs the student is interested in. This keeps students engaged and gives them something they'll look forward to practice. Once a basic understanding of chords is achieved, I move on the notes on the fretboard and music patterns and intervals to help gain an understanding of how the guitar works. Then we move on to the CAGED system along with scales and modes, all the while teaching the student songs they pick that incorporate the techniques they are learning, I'm order to keep them engaged and give them something to share and mark their progress. I have been teaching private lessons for about 15 years, as well as camps and workshops. I have served as a clinician and instructor at Drumline camps and with Orchestra. I created the Percussive Arts Institute of Ruston to bring music education to an underserved community and taught around 100 students in an after-school program. Most of my students study the fundamentals of piano and voice, and then Branch into either percussion, guitar, strings, or brass, as they develop their interests. Read More

At that age, it's all about their goals, since the students are self-sufficient and able to decide what's best for their goals on their own. As far as method books go, I like Hal Leonard's Essential Elements (I've used those methods a lot when teaching middle school band) for young students, Hanon's exercises and Bela Bartok's Mikrokosmos for intermediate piano, and trips to Guitar Center for adult guitarists (I'm serious: John Petrucci has a great method for Rock Guitar, for example). Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
