I am a musician at the heart of it all. Ever since I was a youngin' I've always had a melody or beat going in my head. I started playing guitar at age 11 and took lessons for about 6 months. After that most everything was self taught or came from experience with playing with others. I picked up drums about age 14 and am very comfortable and confident on both instruments 13+ years later. For young children I usually use the Suzuki method books for song selection and through those we can focus on the basic fundamentals of positioning and technical development. It is easy to see what needs to be addressed through those first few songs and we can go from there. For older children and adults we can select from a wider variety with input from the student and we can work on whatever technical issues arise based on the level of the student. Read More

Regardless of a student's skill level, I utilize my own personal methods and lesson plans when teaching. I find that building a personal plan with each student helps in building and maintaining the student's interest in continuing to learn. for beginners, as well as younger students, I start with showing the student how to hold and get sound from the instrument. I then assign them a single major scale and possibly a simple song to play along with. Read More

I find a balanced approach to studying technique, sight reading, theory and the students favorite songs to be the best recipe for keeping motivated and engaged. Beginning students will use Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method (Book 1) to get into the basics of these elements down, while learning basic voicings of the most common chords that will allow them to dive into playing some of their favorite songs almost immediately. Lessons for more advanced students will be tailored to their individual needs, and can cover anything from improvising, to songwriting to learning complicated solos and advanced guitar techniques. As mentioned before, I learned that I have an affinity to make the music fun. It's never just work with me. I believe that a musician has done his/her job not when he/she can channel the energy of the music onto the listener. I love watching a student's face light up when they are able to play a lick or a statement that they never thought they would be able to play, or when I see the proverbial lightbulb going on atop their heads. For all students from beginners to adults I use Alfred's Piano books as they are very transparent and easy to follow. I also strongly believe that even beginner students as early as 4 can learn scales and chords even though many teachers don't introduce such things until they reach an older age and have more experience. It is very apparent to me that many teachers under estimate how truly brilliant children are and how they can soak up material much more quickly at a younger age. Read More
