My methods vary from student to student, as I am very sensitive and flexible to the needs of the student as an individual. If the flutist plays in a band or orchestra at school, I like to review the music with them so they feel comfortable with it before we move on to lesson repertoire. Scales are also very important! (yes, I am one of those teachers :-) In terms of books I consistently use, I am particularly fond of Trevor Wye's books for beginners, the 'Melodious and Progressive Studies' etude books for any level, and Taffanel and Gaubert's daily exercise book for intermediate/advanced students. Teaching Philosophy I believe that a students passion for learning music begins with the instructors passion for teaching music. Even after 20 years, I find that I enjoy working with students as much today as my first year teaching. What fuels this passion, for me, is to constantly expand what I teach, and improve the way in which I teach it. I don't have any experience at this time but I think that it is very important to get a regular constant practice schedule so that they can understand and practice the key points that were taught to them. I will give the students some classical music and modern music because I know that it will help the students learn if they play something they would like to play. I've blended my methods with a response to each student I work with by requesting their trust, listening to their places of comfort and interest in playing music, and discovering new avenues of development with the student. I encourage them to draw from those areas in our sessions as we develop our repertoire and enhance individual growth from there.
