For beginning students, I start teaching fundamentals through the Rubank Essential Elements book. As students move toward intermediate-advanced levels I introduce the Jeanne Baxtresser book of Orchestral Excerpts and the Taffanel-Gaubert book for technique. I bring in a piece each lesson for sight-reading practice to encourage students to read music on their toes. Additionally, through practicing scales, students learn music theory and notation. In each lesson the student and myself work to make goals for them to accomplish every week and discuss discuss the ways they might be able to go about accomplishing the goals. Sometimes I will make audio recordings of a student to track progress. For a student to sit and really listen to the improvemnets they have made I find to be one of my best teaching tools. After years of training, she later moved to the United States to pursue her passion at the University of Utah under the guidance of Professor Caitlyn Valovick Moore (Piccolo Player in the Utah Symphony) and Lisa Byrnes (Associate Principal Flute in the Utah Symphony) on the Matthews Music Scholarship and the Gochnour Flute Scholarship.
