I am the former principal flute of the Queen City Chamber Orchestra of Cincinnati, principal of Seven Hills Baroque Orchestra, founding member of both the Cincinnati Camerata Baroque and the Aurora Ensemble, and a leader in the New Hampshire music non-profit Silentwoods Collective. With two masters of music degrees (one in flute and one in historical performance) I am equally at home teaching modern flute/piccolo and historical flutes. Flutist Gina I. “Rattles speakers and expectations with stop-time razzle, vocal (flute-talk) and electronic (phaser) effects" (NYC Jazz Record). The New York-based musician is a recent recipient of a 2016 New Music USA Impact Award and a 2015 New Music USA Project Grant. ​Over the past year, Gina has performed in collaboration with artists stemming from the New York Downtown music scene incorporating classical and contemporary music, free improvisation, and electronics. In 2016 Izzo released Crashing Through Fences by Timo Andres on Ian David Rosenbaum's debut album Memory Palace (VIA Records), and was selected for a fellowship at the Bang on a Can Festival Residency at MASSMoCA where she performed and premiered works by John Luther Adams, Julia Wolfe, Missy Mazzoli, Louis Andriessen, among many others. For beginning students, I start with a method book that provides them with both aural, visual, and kinesthetic instruction, such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. In addition to work in the method book, I work with my students to develop a curriculum that is high individualized and caters to their needs and, more importantly, their interests. In the past four years at Northwestern University, I consistently taught music to students in their homes privately. I encouraged regular practice and a consistent weekly schedule, especially for younger students. I believe that the faster students see positive results of their hard work, the more likely they are to remain passionate and excited about their musical careers. I enjoy preparing my students for concerts, recitals, school talent shows (and any other opportunity) by maintaining high standards, efficiently using lesson time, and combining pedagogically sound teaching with an excellent model for my students to mirror. While growing up in San Diego I served as the principal flutist of the San Diego Youth Symphony, and played with local community orchestras. My teaching style allows the child to have fun while they learn their instrument, but I emphasize a strong practice regiment.
