I taught classical flute and recorder in the Austrian school system and music schools for 15 years. Later, I was the band director and music teacher for the grades 4-12 grades in the Syracuse City Schools. I conducted a concert band, jazz band and had over 70 students in my band programs. For beginning children, I typically like to use the Alfred series of beginner books depending on the instrument. I also like the students to rely on their ears just as equally, so the other half of the lesson is usually dedicated to learning music without relying on reading music. Of course, this is all dependent on the student's needs or prior experience.
