In 2005, he won the 1st prize at the Houston flute club, Denise Jennings Memorial Solo & Ensemble Competition Professional level, also has selected one of 5 finalists of the Byron Hester memorial competition. For beginner piano students I generally work out the Faber Piano Adventures and for adults I use The Older Beginner Piano Course by Bastien. For Flute students I use the Trevor Wye Beginners Book for the Flute. Clarinet I use the Rubank Method books. For beginners I often start with the Standard of Excellence, but it does not take long before we start to get into more individualized education. For example, a student may be bound for high school jazz band, in which case we will immediately begin on music theory and scale/mode practice from as early as 5th grade. On the other hand, I may have a high school flute student who wants to audition for conservatory, in which case I would use some Marcel Moyse books, orchestral excerpt practice, and standard solo repertoire. While I do teach repertoire, my main goals are to foster a passion for music and the ability to approach new music my students may encounter. This, combined with gauging each student's skill level and needs, is the basis of my teaching style. I never use negative incentives with my students, as I believe that does more harm than good.
