I've found that presenting multiple solutions to varying problems gives the students the best chance to succeed and it's not that someone cannot learn, they just haven't been presented with an explanation they can understand and clicks for them. Putting a label on any student, and/or compartmentalizing students is the last thing I would ever do. There are a couple of good method books, but introducing appropriate solo repertoire as early as possible creates a sense of self accomplishment, and so I normally follow my teaching instincts to know exactly the best time to bring this into the picture. My area of expertise is Sight Reading. This is an essential aspect of learning to play any instrument. A good sight reader is always able to learn their pieces faster and be better performers.
