I have 14 years of experience working with Elementary and Middle School aged musicians in a variety of capacities. I began my career as a Band Director, working with at-risk students in an after school program which served both Coachella Valley and Desert Sands unified school district. I later took a position with San Marcos Unified School District as a k-5 general music teacher, working with a student body of 1100 students on multiple focus areas, including group piano, musical theater, instrumental music and vocal music. Out of college and newly married, I began teaching both piano and flute. When babies came along, I focused on them instead. But after they were grown, I went back into music headlong! For children 7-11, I suggest a fundamentals book like Standard of Excellence or Accent on Achievement. Later, I will introduce an exercise book called the Rubank's Method, which helps with articulation and technical skill. I also will ask the student to pick a fun songbook which they will be motivated to practice.
