As principal, I read The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar to over 90 classes of students during my tenure. I did this because I loved the story and it enabled me to connect with my students and teachers, and indirectly parents, in important and personal ways. I teach either in my home or yours using a 1 on 1 approach focusing on confidence and control, personal solo voice and style development, and versatility and ensemble skills. I also help with ear training, harmonic knowledge, rhythmic accuracy, tone development, and all nuances of musicality. As an educator, I believe it is important to continue school music instruction into private flute lessons. I like to communicate with a child's school music teacher in the beginning of flute lessons, so that I can keep music terminology consistent for students, as well as reinforce concepts they're already learning (while expanding musically of course!). I like to have students keep a lesson packet where progress is documented, along with a journal--I find that reflecting for five minutes after a practice session (things that went well, things you need help on, questions), are important tools when striving for success.
