My teaching experience began in 2008, when I began teaching private lessons on various instruments, on voice, and on conducting. I later went on to teach band and choir at Cedar Bluff High School in 2011. After this, I volunteered as the band director at Valley Head High School in 2014. I have enjoyed every moment of teaching music and have taken so much from the experiences that I've had. I like to figure out what their reason is and progress accordingly. Since the age of 11, Anna Kate has held a tremendous passion for classical flute. It was her junior year of high school when she decided to pursue a career in music and started her journey by joining the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra, which toured in France, performing at large concerts in various cities. Subsequently she was accepted to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts High School to further advance her studies in flute, requiring extensive time commitments of practicing five plus hours per day. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. As a big believer in scales as the building blocks of good technique and music itself, I provide basic exercises as early on as possible. For intermediate and advanced students, I like to use the first lesson as an opportunity to hear a piece or two that they've played before, then work on some of the things they've already learned so I can determine what sorts of ideas they respond to and what they can work on improving.
