For beginning students, I combine multiple elements to understand the various aspects of their new instruments. With a combination of videos for inspiration, singing for audiation, and moving for connection to the instrument and how our muscles respond to it. My lessons rarely consist of sitting for the entire time. I believe that in the short time we have in lessons, it is more important to expose students to a variety of resources to investigate their new endeavor than it is to repeat repertoire for the sake of a quick result. For the beginner who is 11 or younger, I start with John Thompson's Piano Courses to make sure the student familiar with all necessary elements of music. Then I will introduce some music that helps developing fingers appropriately and beautiful at the same time, such as Lemoine and Burgnlueller. For a young adult or a prospective college student, I will generally focus on checking their embouchure, what their knowledge of major and minor scales are, how fluent they are reading sheet music, what reeds they should be playing on, and among things. We then move on to more advanced topics that would not be possible to cover in their band classes at their home school. We further move on to the Intermediate and Advanced methods while also adding solo repertoire that is suitable to their skill level. Along with these method books, we will also work on music that they personally enjoy. In the time between then, I have been involved as a private instructor, small chamber coach, full band director, and covered any other position possible for many schools; I have ample experience in teaching and performing many styles common in the school system.
