I'm a flutist, Japanese language instructor, and Alexander Technique teacher based in Seattle, WA. My teaching experience spans over 15 years and includes Japanese language lessons, private flute instruction, chamber music workshops, and an assistantship to a Dalcroze eurhythmics course. I hold degrees from New England Conservatory and the University of Washington. For all of my new students, I gauge where they are at in their musical development and start to create a plan for them. I assess their strengths first and then go right into areas that need work. I work a lot on fundamentals such as breathing, sound development, and comfortable hand position so that students can use their bodies most efficiently in their music making. My teaching method is tailored to the desired goal of the student. I commonly employ classical fundamentals, which provide the student with tools needed to play the instrument. These fundamentals include: long-tones (for tone production), scales (for technique), overtone series (for the low/high range of the instrument) and reading music. It all depends on the areas of music the student would like to focus on. No matter if it's music theory, composition, or performance, my main idea is to intricately learn the about the music that interests you, learn how to apply it on your instrument, and then use your creativity to create something new.
