For all of my new students, I gauge where they are at in their musical development and start to create a plan for them. I assess their strengths first and then go right into areas that need work. I work a lot on fundamentals such as breathing, sound development, and comfortable hand position so that students can use their bodies most efficiently in their music making. I also insist on students learning to develop musical ideas right from the start so they realize that playing the flute is not only about blowing air and pushing buttons. Read More

I first find out how the students learns best. Knowing if somebody is hands on, likes to listen, needs to watch, be shown etc. can impact the experience and quality of the lesson. Using analogies is something that has really helped me in my practicing so I enjoy passing that on. Setting realistic short term and long term goals are absolutely essential to progression, along with finding an inspiration. I have always found a player who inspired me and would figure out what they were doing to sound the way they sound. Read More

For young beginners, I love incorporating fun activities and interactive methods to make learning engaging and enjoyable. I use creative exercises to introduce musical concepts and build a strong technical foundation while keeping the lessons playful and age-appropriate. As students progress, I introduce solo pieces that match their skill level, helping them prepare for their first recitals with confidence. For adult students, I take a more personalized approach, finding out their musical interests and tailoring lessons to keep them motivatedwhether it's learning classical pieces, popular songs, or exploring improvisation. My teaching method is tailored to the desired goal of the student. I commonly employ classical fundamentals, which provide the student with tools needed to play the instrument. These fundamentals include: long-tones (for tone production), scales (for technique), overtone series (for the low/high range of the instrument) and reading music. From here, each lesson is modified to the particular student's goals, whether that is improvisation, playing jazz, performing classical literature, exploring experimental music, etc. Read More

I began private teaching while studying in college and am looking to expand and build a studio in The Greater Seattle Area.  I have taught my own students and acted as a substitute teaching instructor ; nurturing and respecting the teaching styles already presented to the students. During my schooling in Boston, I studied Alexander Technique and always try to incorporate body awareness when working with students! I have helped former students achieve their goals for auditions and recitals, and enjoy helping students find a piece that really sparks their interest. Read More
