Tommy has been teaching since 2017. He has taught in both one-on-one and group lessons for students of all ages. Tommy has taught flute, clarinet, saxophone, and theory lessons to both beginning students and at the collegiate level. Tommy also performs with many different ensembles across a wide variety of genres. Tommy is 3rd/Bass Clarinetist for the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, runs the Delicious Bass Bass Clarinet Choir, runs the Elite Four Jazz Band, and is a reoccurring performer with the Oswego Chamber Musicians. I always ask my students what they want to learn; I then fit the program to their needs.  If they want to be a rock lead player, than we learn the scales, theory, techniques needed.  If they want to play finger picked folk music, then we focus on those techniques and songs.  I always recommend a strong background in theory and reading but I introduce it when the student is ready for it.  Nothing is learned in a vacumn.  There is always a purpose to anything I teach. My teaching follows the books quite a bit, so that the student remembers what was taught when they go home and practice. I like for the student to have a notebook that I can write in supplemental information. I understand that each student learns differently and I am able to differentiate my teaching methods to best fit the student needs. I have been singing since the tender age of three! I have loved singing and performing since then. This love has propelled me into the classrooms where I honed my craft. I also learned the discipline of practicing on other instruments as I went through high school at Emerson School for the Visual and Performing Arts. I graduated with honors as a vocal major. I first started teaching piano and flute/piccolo back when I was in high school. When I started, I mainly focused on helping my fellow students prepare for performances and competitions. When I was in college, I was offered a temporary teaching position to teach piano at Allegro Music Academy (Lemont, IL) and I was able to work with children of all ages and playing levels. I will begin by asking a student what their goals are when it comes to playing the flute. I will base my teaching material and instructions methods off of this consultation and tune specifically to each student. If a student comes in knowing nothing, I will start with the very basics of the instrument (instrument set up and care, sound production, fingerings etc.). once they have the building blocks, I can them begin teaching them the specifics of whatever genre they want to focus on, be it classical, jazz, soul, hip hop etc. Read More
