My name is Jessica. I have been playing flute for 23 yrs and enjoy teaching beginner flute 6-8th grade and volunteer flute lessons for a local middle schools. I have been playing piccolo since freshman year of college. I work from home for apple and practice my flute about 10+ hours a week. When I start with a beginning student, I always ask the student to bring any music they are current learning, want to learn and a challenge piece to look forward to that way we are able to build a road map of the students learning and what skills we need to achieve to learn that acquired piece. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for the fine arts! Therefore, it’s important that each student progresses at his or her own pace, I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student’s desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. A method I use to encourage my student’s progress is to give them stars for when they work on their assignment; the stars they earn will allow the student to choose a song of their choice that is not from the same genre being studied—this may be a pop song. I was also foreign faculty at the College of the Bahamas in Nassau, New Providence, where I taught concert band, flute, clarinet, guitar, Music History, vocal techinques and World Music. I studied piano with renowned jazz pianist, Ray Santisi, at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and with international performer and accompanist, Phillip Moll.
