I am a firm, fair, and disciplined instructor. I believe in leading by example and that the only way to become great at something is with dedication, practice and patience. I begun my musical journey at 4 on the flute classically, I consider myself self taught until highschool where I begun to pick up and play any instrument I could get my hands on. I have performed in a large classical symphonic orchestra, solo, small ensembles of Jazz as well as on the world stage as a competive highland bagpiper. Read More

I believe that students excel in an encouraging and praise filled environment. I also believe that students should be taught how to practice so that they can excel. I tailor each lesson according to the students needs and do my best to instill in them a love for Music. If a student is getting frustrated I am not afraid of taking a break and working on something fun that engages the student. Read More

I have been playing the flute for 30 years! Back in school, I performed and competed actively. I love to play and love to teach. In another life, I would be a professional musician, but for now, I play in my spare time and try to encourage others by teaching. I know the feeling of performing and helping others feel emotion with music. I also know how great it feels to master a difficult piece of music. Read More

My teaching style is fun and engaging! In a typical lesson, I chat with a student for 1-2 minutes, go into warm-ups, drone work, technique, etudes, concert pieces, and sight-reading. Goals are set with all parties involved (student, parent/guardian, teacher, music director). I love to inspire my student through many various avenues while giving them additional musical opportunities where they can perform or learn new skills. This is my motto surrounding music: Music is the social act of communication among people, a gesture of friendship, the strongest there is." Malcolm Arnold Read More

My teaching experience began in college as I began to help teach some of my peers that were interested in taking up saxophone as a hobby. I realized immediately that I had a passion for connecting people to their passion for music and wanted to continue doing that. I eventually began to teach outside of school in the homes of interested students in the Washington, D.C. area. By doing this I was approached to work in DC public schools as an aid to the music programs that were both established and just beginning by giving individual and group instruction to the students. I had an opportunity to start teaching early as a student leader in my high school music program and continuing into college. I've found that my students have a much higher level of success when they are encouraged to practice regularly at home. I use classical repertoire to build techniques across styles and modern music to keep students engaged. If they aren't enjoying themselves, I'm not doing something correctly. I encourage students to enter recitals and competitions as well as create their own original material. Read More

I use the same books and methods that were taught to me. Trevor Wye's books on Tone and Technique form the foundation of learning the flute. A Rhythm A Day is exactly what it says - a different rhythm to practice that the student may encounter in music they play later. I also use daily breathing exercises to work on breath control - the most important part of playing the flute! Read More
