For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I also believe in the importance of listening to as many professional recordings as possible of the instrument the student is taking lessons on. Read More

I have about eight years of professional performance experience, and six years of professional teaching experience. In that time, I have had the opportunity to perform with music and entertainment legends such as Robin Thicke, Fred Willard, Sinbad, Ndugu Chancler, and Edward James Olmos, as well as modern jazz legends like Joshua Redman, Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer, Bob Reynolds, David Sanchez, Benny Green, Donny McCaslin, Joe Lovano, and many more. My name is Rene, I am a flute player and music lover. Music for me is an outlet and a way to express myself. I've been playing flute since I was 13, and music has given me a lot while growing up. Music taught me discipline, it gave me self confidence, brought me friends, taken me to places, and helped me understand myself better. After training as a flute performer at University of California Santa Barbara, I traveled to China and taught students and played at various events. Read More

My philosophy is to teach the student what they want to learn while including basic music theory. I feel it’s important they know what they are doing from the inside out and why. I plan performance opportunities for the students month. This gives each student a tangible goal to work toward. I emphasize that music is another language we can communicate with. Every time we practice we perfect our ability to communicate more fully. Read More

I like to work with my students to figure out what their passion is within the wide scope of music, and work from there. My lessons include: technique and warm-up exercises, performance preparation, personalized arranging, and an emphasis on individualized lesson plans based on level, interests, and goals. Depending on the instrument, level, and genre, some teaching materials I like to use are: Faber series, Fingerpower series, Music for Little Mozarts, Czerny etudes, A Tune a Day, Forty Little Pieces, Steps to the Real Book (Jim Levy), Jazz Piano Handbook (Michele Weir), Heart It and Sing It! (Judy Niemack), classical and popular music repertoire, and my own original exercises. Read More

I use several levels of method books that may encompass technical concepts (Moyse), orchestral studies (J. Donjon), Selected Duets, Solo works, Aebersold Jazz Studies and custom lesson plans that I create according to the performance level of the student. It is important to be creative in implementing the different levels of cognition to help students effectively retain and use new information. With regards to technical development I encourage all students to practice slowly for accuracy and muscle memory. Read More
