While Joey loves to preform, he is passionate about teaching. He has been teaching since 2011. His teaching career began through the non-profit Bravo Waukegan in their Bravo Buddies Summer Camp. He began as the woodwind instructor and through the years worked to become the Artistic Director, managing all aspects of the month long camp. Joey has also served as the Director of Bands for Sistema Ravinia in Lake County and has worked as a teaching artist with the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and for the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. I am the former principal flute of the Queen City Chamber Orchestra of Cincinnati, principal of Seven Hills Baroque Orchestra, founding member of both the Cincinnati Camerata Baroque and the Aurora Ensemble, and a leader in the New Hampshire music non-profit Silentwoods Collective. With two masters of music degrees (one in flute and one in historical performance) I am equally at home teaching modern flute/piccolo and historical flutes. For beginning students, I start with a method book that provides them with both aural, visual, and kinesthetic instruction, such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. In addition to work in the method book, I work with my students to develop a curriculum that is high individualized and caters to their needs and, more importantly, their interests. It is important to adopt a teaching style that is tailored to the individual needs of each student, especially because each student learns at their own pace. Setting goals is one of the first topics I discuss with my students, and then indicate some of the steps they need to take to achieve the goals that they set for themselves. Keeping track of a student's hours of practice and their musical achievements is beneficial for me to determine what new material and concepts to work on, and also allows the student to stay organized and motivated.  Read More
