I have experience teaching flute and piccolo students ages 6-60, from brand new beginners to advanced high school students and beyond. I have worked with students in a variety of settings, from one on one private lessons, small group sessions, to flute sectional coaching. My primary goal is always for lessons to be a fun and positive experience at any level. While I emphasize technique and fundamentals at all levels because I believe these are essential to develop the skill required learning any instrument, I always like to end lessons with a skill appropriate duet, because the best part of music making is being able to create and share it with others. For younger beginning student I prefer to use Essential Elements for a good foundation. For older beginners I prefer the Rubank Method. Once the basics are grasped I add in level appropriate solo music. As the students progress I move either into the Rubank Method for younger students or the Trevor Wye method for the older students. I supplement some of the things in the book with other literature and hand written exercise to help enhance learning experience. Lessons are challenging yet fun. As students improve their skills, I find they usually enjoy playing even more than when they started. I try to find ways to make scales and tone exercises more interesting so students are more likely to incorporate these things into their daily practice. It is also important to choose repertoire that is the right level of difficulty so students are not bored or frustrated. When a student is struggling with a new concept or a difficult technical challenge, I can offer them many different ways to identify and then practice the issue. Read More

For young children (ages 4-10), I focus primarily on building a foundation in rhythm, pitch matching, and vocal warm ups (wolf howls, lip trills, tongue trills, etc.). I also encourage young children to bring in songs they enjoy singing, and use those songs to help build their understanding of musical structure. For slightly more experienced children (those who already can read music) I teach using the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) guidelines. Read More

I like using flashcards, so students can quickly develop their site-reading. I use different techniques that meet the individual capacity of the students and adults. For intermediate and advanced students I prefer scales, etudes (exercises), sonatas, concertos and solo pieces of their preference. I like to play duets with my students and that is usually their favorite part as we can combine talents to play something beautiful.
