For beginning flutists, I typically start with the Rubank Elementary Method so that they can have a basic grasp of the fundamentals. Beyond that, I introduce books according to their musical goals and needs. Some of the books my students have studied out of are the Rubank Intermediate/Advanced books and the Melodious and Progressive Studies edited by Cavally. For my intermediate students, we start by using Taffanel and Gaubert Grand Exercises for technique. I also require my students to have Trevor Wye books for tone and technique. As a teacher, it’s difficult to learn by being rushed or lagging behind, so I believe it’s important that every student is able to learn at their own pace. I encourage this by highlighting accomplishments, no matter how small, so that way it can encourage a student to want to keep learning.
