At each lesson, I try to touch on different components of musicality. Beginning with tone and technique, posture and proper warm up. Then we work on pieces of music and incorporating theory, and playing musically. It is important as a teacher to set realistic goals for my students, acknowledge their accomplishments and to find out what inspires them. As a member of the United States Army band, “Pershings Own” , in Washington DC, I performed many times every day for state occasions, parades and even a performance at Carnegie Hall. Boston provided many opportunities for performance including , The Lowell house opera orchestra… Harvard University , Mercury Orchestra, Newton symphony… Lincoln Center, Harvard university band… The Hatch Shell. When I first meet a student, I like evaluate their current skill level and based on that, I will have an idea of which direction to guide them. I will learn their intentions of what their goals are short term and long term so we can work together to prepare for what is to come. We will study fundamentals, solo repitore, scales, basic theory and contemporary technique. I will also work with helping the student to choose an upgrade flute if they feel they are ready. Read More
