Overview:
I began my studies of music and flute as a teenager in middle school. I was particularly interested when I began to study privately during high school and it was at this time that I began to compete and participated in the All County Band in Dade County. During my college years at Universtiy of Florida, I studied flute with Sara Fouse and I participated in the Gator Marching Bands, Orchestra and Concert Bands. When I attended Rhode Island School of Design, I performed  flute and piccolo in the Brown University Orchestra and also studied flute at Boston University. Throughout the years, I have taken Master classes with Orchestral Flutists such as Julius Baker of the New York Philharmonic and Jeannie Baxtresser in Tanglewood, Mass. Even though my Major was Art and  I made a living as an art teacher in the public school system, my love for flute and music was always present as I would often incorporate music and flute playing into my art lessons.
EXPERIENCE
During the time that I was working on my Masters Degree in Art Education at University of Florida, I also taught group classes in flute to adults at the Reitz Union. I had some private flute students as well. I worked as an Art Educator for Dade County Public Schools from 1988-1999. Then I worked as a substitute teacher and elementary art teacher for the School Board of Broward County from 1999-2007. Since then I have been teaching Flute and Art privately out of my home. I am presently adding to my musical knowledge by studying piano and music theory and I am also taking courses to become Suzuki certified in Flute. I love to teach children and adults flute and/or art. I feel that it is so stimulating to communicate with people and watch them improve and grow. Teaching helps you to articulate what you know and reinforce your knowledge, which ultimately adds to a teacher's personal growth as a musician and artist.
METHODS USED
For beginning students who are children, I typically start out with Rubank Elementary Method for flute or piccolo. For very young students who have never read music, I would begin with flute posture on a special Suzuki flute if the student is smaller framed. Blowing and embeshure is of utmost importance the first few weeks and I will have students practice blowing into a bottle and only the head joint of their flutes. If students are very young and have not learned to read music, I work on ear training and listening to music and practicing rhythms before learning to read music. When teaching older students and adults, I feel it is helpful for me to find out what kinds of music they enjoy listening to, so that they can learn these pieces on their instrument. We also play duets together when the student becomes more advanced.
LESSON STYLE
At each lesson, I try to touch on different components of musicality. Beginning with tone and technique, posture and proper warm up. Then we work on pieces of music and incorporating theory, and playing musically. It is important as a teacher to set realistic goals for my students, acknowledge their accomplishments and to find out what inspires them. I encourage students to have a notebook at each lesson so that they can keep track of their practice focus as they continue to increase their playing ability and knowledge.
