For absolute beginners, I start by explaining different parts of the flute. I first work on the headjoint to make sure the student can produce a good sound with good air without assembling all parts together. After a student gets a good sound, I let them assemble the flute and start teaching one note at a time. I usually start with Essential Elements for Flute Level 1. My experience in teaching began in college, teaching younger college students through my schools mentorship program. I also shadowed high school and middle school students lessons through the Hartt School Community division. I was able to learn to teach these students guided by several experienced and accomplished flute instructors. Now currently I am an adjunct flute instructor at NYU. For young beginners I typically with Suzuki Book 1 or the Abracadabra Flute Book.  For children preparing for NYSMA I use the Rubank method with supplements from Forty Little Pieces and gradually move on to more solo repertoire.  For adult students I make repertoire selections based on students' interests while taking care to keep lessons both engaging and fun no matter their starting level.  Although my training is primarily classical, I am happy to incorporate music from other genres into lessons.
