I have taught at the Peabody Conservatory Prep Division, Yale College lessons program, Music in the Schools Initiative, privately contracted lessons, Notre Dame High School in West Haven, CT, and finally and currently, I teach full time as Associate Chair of Music and Assistant Professor at the University of Bridgeport since 2022. My teaching methods always vary to suit the aspirations and needs of a certain student. I start off by finding out what my students like to listen to and what they want to learn from their lessons. For example, if my student was a twelve year old beginner student who wants to learn to play drums to start a rock band, then I would teach him drum grooves to his favorite songs, in order for him to be able to play it with others. I perfer to make sure the student has an understanding of the first position of the instrument before moving on. I have found that one of the best ways to teach, is to teach a student to teach themselves. For beginning students we usually start with sitting at 2 drum sets and learning to hold the sticks. It's then about trying to get the sticks to strike the drum and practice getting a nice sound on the instrument. Even at a young age, it's important to help the students to think about tone and how we are creating sound on these instruments. I use the same technique on the vibes, learning to hold 2 or 4 mallets and just creating simple sounds. Read More
