I find the interests of a student and construct exercises that will allow them to play closer to what they most enjoy, while also disciplining in drumming fundamentals. If there at level three but haven't touched 16th note triplets and go from there. For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals.
