I believe it is important to not only teach the technical aspect of drumming, but also the musicality and artistry that go into creating drum beats and rhythms. I encourage my students to listen to a wide range of music and try to incorporate different styles and influences into their playing. After graduating high school, I went to attend Montclair State University's Jazz program. I learned some chords on Guitar from my hippy uncle. After a few weeks, I started teaching him, and he is 60 years old. Point is, he would listen to songs on the radio like songs from The Beatles and then teach me them. I would hear the chords and realize that he might be playing a similar chord, but not the exact chord. I would play the chord for him and then he would be impressed. Read More

I've been passionate about teaching drums since I was in college, and I was thankful to have great instructors during my formative years that gave me a great foundation for getting new drummers started in a way that is fun, effective, and non-intimidating. A solid foundation in snare drum technique and basic sight-reading is important for all beginners, but I also find it very effective to teach the drums through learning songs with my students.
