I focus on nurturing a students natural curiosity, while helping them find the tools to pursue their own musical interests. Many of my younger students prefer to use technology to connect with music (learning how songs are recorded, and the theory behind songwriting), but I also work with more serious students to prepare for college auditions, state/regional jazz band, etc. My methods differ depending on a student's own goals, but they generally all will start with a technical exercise, an exercise designed to get the student thinking critically, and an application of the concepts we're learning. I'm very encouraging and I really think that being positive and patient is a shortcut to success. I like my lessons to be fun and relaxed, always keeping in mind to reach "the objective of the day". This way of teaching has been very rewarding for both my students and I, for instance when some of them send me a video of them managing to play something they'd have never thought they could do! I like to keep a weekly log in a notebook the student takes home or keeps. I have many books ranging from beginner to advance, for drums, percussion, and piano. Also beginner bass and guitar books. Technique, book work, and song work is how I prefer to split my lesson time. Breaking habits before they become bad ones! Books: The Real Book, Syncopation, Stick Control, etc...I have been teaching at The School of Rock for the past 5 years. Read More

Over the years, I've taken lessons from instructors who had an array of teaching styles. While in high school, I was taught through intimidation and was scared into learning, which is something I was able to handle. This methods can actually turn students away from music which is the main reason dislike approach. Students should be comfortable and relaxed when entering a lesson. This not only creates a positive learning environment for the student but helps create a relationship between instructor and student that only helps the growth of both individuals. Read More

I've been drumming for 15 years now. All the lessons I've had have been through professional instructors. I took lessons from teachers based in St. Louis, New York and Saint Paul. I partook in concert band and Orchestra from elementary to high school. I really love the work of Dave King, a Twin Cities based drummer. I graduated last year with a Bachelors degree in drum performance. I'm always looking to collaborate with other musicians. Read More
