The primary responsibility of a music teacher is to cultivate music literacy; an understanding of music from both a fundamental and holistic standpoint. Fundamentals would include: technique, sight-reading, rhythms, scales, arpeggios, rudiments, chords, etc. Holistic concepts would include: music history, music theory, ear training, ethnomusicology, etc. My ultimate goal for all of my students is to help them become independent and enthusiastic musicians. I want them to be able to continue to learn and grow as musicians when their time under my instruction is over. Read More

I've even continued my percussion studies while in Cincinnati, studying with James Culley of the world-famous Percussion Group Cincinnati. Education has been very important to me - not just my own, but that of others as well. I've been involved with teaching for over 10 years, from my early days of being a section leader in high school to private percussion teaching throughout my undergraduate years, and I intend to keep teaching for the rest of my life. My lesson styles are geared towards the end goals of the students. As not all students will have the desire to become professional musicians, the ultimate goal is to build lifelong lovers of the arts...and if the student decides that music is a career, then the lessons are geared accordingly. For younger children, the ultimate goal is that their love of the music and instrument will spark their desire for practice and further learning, but that they ENJOY music as an art and experience first. My first conversation with students is what they would like to learn. This doesnt have to be specifically about one instrument, but what they would like to become as a musician. What music do the students enjoy? What inspires them? Who are their musical influences? I have taught students to have developmental issues. I have taught gifted students. The biggest teaching method I have is to be flexible because no two students learn alike. Read More

I am a motivated instructor and clinician who loves sharing musical experiences with my students. I started playing percussion at the age of four and began formal training by the age of seven. Throughout middle school and high school, I branched out musically and played low brass, guitar, and bass guitar to become a more well-rounded musician. In order to diversify my musical palette, I attended three universities between 2007-2012 for music education, composition, and performance. Read More

I played with every type of group the university had to offer, including jazz bands, orchestras, concert bands, marching bands, percussion ensembles, steel drum ensembles, hand drum groups, musicals, accompaniment for the dance department, student recitals, rock bands, drum and bugle corps, and more. I continued with these groups while obtaining my Masters degree in Music performance, along with teaching undergraduate percussion majors, teaching university percussion ensembles, and assisting with the teaching of music major courses. I believe that music a personal experience. When faced with a new student I always ask them what type of music they are into and what are they interested in learning and how that type of music makes them feel. It is a critical part of my teaching method. I believe when a student is learning something they have a personal connection to they are more engaged. For beginner students I have them do exercises and teach them about various scales. Read More
