My experience spans 20 years, from Miami to LA. I have played music with, and recorded with, Grammy Award winning artists. I have been a performing musician since High School and have played 1000's of gigs. I have produced 100's of songs for dozens of recording artists as well as having written music for Sony and Warner Brothers. Some students want to play in a band and deal with music and performance right away, and some students want to become very technically adept at the instrument. For beginning students, I would suggest that a practice log be kept in terms of how long they practice each day along with an outline of which exercises or pieces should be done for that amount of time. I suggest students take breaks, even every 5-10 minutes as it relaxes the fingers and the mind and helps minimize frustration or boredom.
