In college when I wasnt studying, performing or rehearsing, I was teaching and being taught. I taught privately in my home studio as well as several lesson studios in and around the North Texas area for 4 years before moving to Chicago where I've continued to teach and perform full time. I want my students to always feel comfortable and to tell me what they want to learn from me. my teaching style is fun and fast. as each student progresses at their own pace. it is very important to set realistic goals. i motivate kids by giving them stickers for each exercise they passed. and that allows them to study and practice more. after they finish a method book, they receive a certificate of achievement. i can successfully guide students thru any challenges they go thru in the music learning process. that gives them the motivation to keep going. i teach them discipline and to have a consistent practicing schedule. I do that by simply finding out what they enjoy. And when I find what they love I teach it to them. For ex. teaching them how to play their favorite songs or to play the theme song from their favorite tv show. Small things like this are what keeps students engaged and exited about lessons. Mindfulness, patience, understanding, and passion are a few words that describe my teaching style. Creating a respectful and creative space for my students to learn is very important to me. I believe if a teacher better understands how a student learns, and what they're passionate about, the quicker the student will improve. I apply the concepts I learn in my lectures to my private teaching. Though no longer a performance major, I'm still an active drummer on and off campus. Along with other musicians, I've worked with the Wirtz center for the performing arts to provide live pit orchestra for their musical productions for the past 3 years.
