For beginners, I like to start with the basics. Students will learn proper stick positions, basic rhythms, tempo, and count. A lot of work is done primarily on the snare drum, progressing to the full set when the student is ready. Once the student has a handle on the fundamentals, I can then have them play along with a simple song. I'm actually very flexible with the methods or books for all of the instruments I teach. Generally, for the band instruments, the director picks the method book. Most of the modern ones are pretty good to get students started, so I'm fine sticking to the director's method of choice and gleaning all the musical gems we can from it. For beginners, I try to keep thing informal and fun while teaching basics without putting any pressure to get into the technical stuff like hand technique and reading until they're ready. For intermediate students, I nudged them along with weekly lessons that are challenging enough to keep them engaged - this includes reading, hand technique and limb independence. Read More

My loveof music began at a young age through playing piano, percussion, and guitarand continued to grow throughout my years of schooling. I graduated from Metropolitan State University of Denver in May of 2013 with my Bachelor of Music degree with a Concentration in Music Composition. I have since been spreading my knowledge of music throughoutmy local community through teaching, playing, and composition.
