In 1983, I attended The Guitar Institute of Technology and studied privately with Frank Gambale, who formalized the single line "sweep technique" on guitar. While in L.A. I also studied with Ed Mann, longtime Frank Zappa percussionist and teacher at Cal. Arts. Since a very early age, I have been obsessed with music. I began playing drums at age 9 and guitar at age 10. I played in Concert/orchestra and Jazz bands all throughout elementary, middle, high school, and college. I have also been apart of numerous bands of my own. When a new student comes in for their first lesson, I always make sure that they have a grasp of the fundamentals. Without the fundamentals it is very easy to develop poor technique that will at best limit them in what can be accomplished on the instrument, and at worst lead to pain or injury from playing. My teaching style is very simple. We will begin by finding the interests of the student. Then we’ll identify what they like about the instrument and their basic knowledge. Once that is done, we’ll begin experimenting with different generes. And finally, we’ll create a plan that will allow them the chance to grow musically and fundamentally on the drums. This in total, will give myself and the student(s) the chance to see how their minds work as far as being able to give different tastes and feels of rhythm, on their instrument. Read More
