I incorporate solo music or duets at every stage of development so students can practice applying the fundamentals to real repertoire. I always ask students what genres they like to play or what their musical interests are so that I can find music that is engaging, exciting, and level-appropriate for them. My beginners normally start with selections out of Hal Leonard’s “Essential Elements” series before transitioning into more advanced etude books or solo repertoire. Read More

To do so, I regularly check-in with students to build a lesson structure that works for them. Read More

for the beginner student, we will start off by going through things such as scales, arpeggios, and exercises to build a solid foundation. While doing this, I will have the student pick a song they like, whether it be pop, country, jazz, classical, and begin to learn it by ear to begin to develop solid aural recognition. Once the fundamentals are solid, we will move on to either working on a sonata or concerto or a transcription and a tune (depending on if you are a jazz student or classical). Read More

I always held passionate teaching as the key to passionate artists. My teaching career began early, while I was still a university student, teaching privately. Later I was the Clarinet instructor at Carl Sandburg High School and A.A. Stagg High school. In Los Angeles I was again a private instructor, but also a faculty member at the Beverly Hills Conservatory of Music. The variety of students and locations provided valuable lessons in tailoring my teaching to the needs of student. Read More
