My methods vary by age group and skill level. I generally use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for students new to the clarinet then progress to Baermann Scale Studies as well as several different methods depending on the student's ability. In addition to etudes, solo repertoire is introduced, also based on the student's ability. Outside of playing the instrument, my lessons include reed fixing and balancing, practice techniques, performance anxiety reduction techniques, and for more advanced students, audition techniques. I have enjoyed teaching since High School, when I traveled to teach students by bus. Later I traveled by car to homes to teach, but have only taught in my studio for over 20 years. I typically start beginner students on the Rubank Elementary Method books for saxophone, clarinet, or flute. These books are a great way to introduce the basic mechanics of the instrument, as well as reading music. I generally like to branch out from the method books as soon as possible, by supplementing the basic reading with other technical studies and pieces. For adults and more advanced students, I like to steer the focus more in the direction of what they want to learn, while still teaching the proper fundamentals of the instrument! Read More
