Yes for teaching piano I use Nancy and Randall Faber's books. I have used all of them. For guitar and mandolin I generally do not use a "book". As the lessons progress I might introduce a book if that is what is called for. All orchestral instruments call for the structure of a book and I augment that with my own explanations. I like to follow a format for lessons, giving a certain amount of time to warming up, practicing technical studies and scales, etudes or lessons, solo literature and ensemble (duet, trio, ensemble) literature. I would encourage students to make an agenda for practicing, I believe many student need to learn how to practice, much like study skills, so they can make good use of their time. I use the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements method for my beginning students. As my students progress, I introduce solo repertoire suitable for a recital/performance situation. These were wonderful opportunities to teach peers and those who have been in the music education field much longer than the four of us. Although teaching large groups is exciting, nothing beats one-on-one lessons with a student.
