For beginning students who are children, I typically teach the book that they use in band class. If they/the parents would prefer a specific book or are not in band, I typically use Standard of Excellence, the red book and then progress to the blue book. I started teaching private lessons in college and continued doing so after graduation. I like teaching private lessons because students learn valuable skills and techniques that will help in every aspect of a student's life. Students learn time management, dedication, and work ethic through taking private lessons and I love watching students grow throughout the process. As a music teacher, I have ample experience with students in grades 4-12. For piano students, I prefer Alfred's methods, whether the adult or for beginners. For band and orchestra, I use Essential Elements (or whatever their school is using), and supplement with Rubank's methods. For voice, I concentrate on whatever the student is interested in, with a foundation of good technique and understanding of the voice range and how to control it, with some solfege and sight-singing mixed in. I have been teaching bagpipes since 2017 and thoroughly enjoy passing along my knowledge to new eager students. I'm always looking for new ways to explain things and pass along information in different ways depending on a student's ability and aptitude.
