I encourage all my students to take charge of their lessons by asking them to develop questions throughout the week, prioritize what music we focus on, and tune into their own weaknesses and strengths. While I will guide them along the way, I want my students to gain the confidence to make decisions for themselves. I’ve enjoyed teaching the clarinet since I first decided to get serious about music in high school. I got my start by offering lessons to younger students in my neighborhood and the surrounding towns in the western suburbs of Chicago. During my undergraduate years in Greencastle, IN, I took several clarinet pedagogy classes and began teaching local students in the DePauw University Preparatory Program. In my junior year, I entered a 2-year apprenticeship with the Chicago-based Fifth House Ensemble where I worked with community partners to engage students in classical music performances and appreciation. Teaching is something I have always felt passionately about. I first started teaching at the age of 14, teaching martial arts to young kids nearly every day at my stepfather’s martial arts school. As I grew up and began taking music more seriously, teaching remained an important part of my life: as clarinet section leader in the Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band in Hawaii, I was responsible for administering weekly lessons to other clarinet players in the band, and I also worked with several school music programs in Hawaii, developing and leading masterclasses for K-12 students. Tommy has taught flute, clarinet, saxophone, and theory lessons to both beginning students and at the collegiate level.
