Overview:
Anthony Rodriguez is a Chicago-based woodwind doubler who is proficient in flute, oboe, saxophone and clarinet. He studied these instruments while attaining his Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from Brooklyn College under the esteemed Bernard Goldberg (Flute), Bob Ingliss (Oboe), and Paul Cohen (Saxophone). Previous teachers have also included Helen Campo (flute), Edino Biaggi (Oboe) and Salim Washington (saxophone/woodwinds). Anthony began his musical career as a classical saxophonist at the age of 16 years old. He has performed with the ISO Symphonic Band and ISO Symphonic Symphony at notable venues, such as Carnegie Hall and Symphony Space. Anthony has also performed as the lead alto in Xaverian High School’s Senior Jazz Band for the Cherry Blossom Festival in Kyoto, Japan. In 2008, Anthony furthered his musical proficiency by enrolling as a participant in the prominent French Woods Camp in New York. He went on to become the Oboe/Woodwind staff member of the program in 2010. While in this position, Anthony performed in Concert Band, French Woods Symphony, and in up to 12 musicals per summer. During that time, he also taught multiple private lessons and sectionals to campers on a variety of woodwind instruments. In 2012, Anthony was invited to join the “Phantom of the Opera” International Tour for their run in Jakarta, Indonesia. Following the successful run of the show, he returned to the United States and joined Northern Stage in White River Junction, Vermont for both of their main stage musicals of the 2012-2013 season. Upon completion of this run in Vermont, Anthony relocated to Chicago, Illinois. He has since been highly active in the Musical Theatre scene; typically having a full schedule of performances in a variety of theaters, such as Music Theater Works, Metropolis, Porchlight and Drury Lane. Anthony has also become a member of the band “Mike Flood & Co.” is the current Secretary/ Treasurer of the TMA Chicago Chapter and serves as woodwind coach for the CYSO. He is always looking to expand his musical knowledge and to challenge himself.
EXPERIENCE
I am mainly a Reed Player( Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Saxophones). I have toured on multiple shows mainly internationally with Phantom of the Opera as well as playing in multiple Regional Equity theaters. I Started learning my first instrument (Saxophone) in sixth grade and fell in love with music ever since.
METHODS USED
I tend to use the Rubank Method Books and Essential Element books for the essential warm-up, practice and to gain valuable techniques that are often overlooked with classroom teachers. For both students and adults I feel it is necessary to have fun while progressing forward.
LESSON STYLE
As I said earlier I tend to use the Rubank and Essential Element books in lessons. I start with seeing what the students goals are and making a goal sheet. For instance if a student is interested in Musicals. We will start with our basic warm up and techniques but on top of that I would assign an excerpt from a musical that correlates with the current lesson. So that way the student is working toward their goal and having fun doing so.
